Start a Business

It doesn’t cost you much to start a business. Most states charge a small fee to register the business name and get a sales or business ID. But there is a reason that most small businesses fail within the first five years. Not everyone has the knowledge to run a business. If you have a great idea to start a small business, you might consider partnering with someone who is a good business manager or at least getting an advisor or preferably a team of advisors to help you make decisions as you face issues.

Most successful home businesses are based on a small start. Whether you bake cookies for your community and expand your small business into a national company with retail and online outlets, or you have a great idea for a boutique or spa, you have to consider all the same business factors a large company would consider in order to be successful.

Today, you have the advantage of getting some help and defining a business structure using online tools. The Small Business Administration and other organizations founded by state and federal government agencies offer tools and guidelines to ensure that you consider all the factors of your small business and plan for success.

Successful businesses must consider all of the following factors:

1.    Where will you do business – in what city, state, or online community?

2.    Who is your main competition and how will you differentiate yourself from those companies?

3.    What pricing plans and structures will you use?

4.    What is your image? Do you want to be known as a discount small business, a high end business, a small business that offers unique products or a small business with excellent, dependable customer service?

5.    How will you staff the functions within the small business?

6.    Do you have the knowledge to run all aspects of the business – financial, legal, sales, advertising and marketing, product development, sales channels, content and writing, promotions, pricing, stock and inventory, shipping, payment intake, expansion, planning, and strategy? If not, how will you get advice in these areas?

These are just some of the things you have to consider to start a business and build a successful business. You don’t have to be perfect, but you do have to have a reasonable answer for the fundamental questions.
